The state possess one of the hydrographic networks with the greatest water availability in Brazil, with a dense surface hydrographic network divided into three major basins: the Uruguai, which drains about 57% of the total area of Rio Grande do Sul; the Guaíba, 30%; and the Coastal, encompassing approximately 13% of the territory.
